Homesteading Building a Dream

As of June 2014 we moved into our 235 sq. ft RV with NO pull-outs! We were a family of 7 at the time and things were pretty squished. Right now I am pregnant with baby #8 which bumps us up to a family of 10 real soon!

I would be lying if I told you I didn't feel a PUSH to get our home built soon. Full-time RV living has felt like a blessing some days and other days not so much! You have to get rid of space issues real quick if you are going to live with a large family in an RV. We actually had to get a 2nd small trailer to contain us all, and just barely. I encourage myself knowing my kids are going to have really great stories to share with their kids some day. I imagine sitting around the campfire with my future grandchildren sharing about all of our homestead stories one day.

When we sold our home which had just under 3,000 Sq ft of living space we got rid of a ton of stuff. Months before we decided to sell our home I was already feeling the pull to simplify life and lead a more minimalistic lifestyle. Moving from to a home to an RV took care of that issue real quick! We had to make some hard choices about what was really necessary for our new tiny living lifestyle.

We arrived in Texas in October 2014. We didn't have plans to buy land immediately, but providence had a different idea. We ended up buying 100 acres just a week after we arrived! Since arriving we have cultivated many dreams. One of them is to build a generational home for our children and future grand-children to live in.

I do a lot of dreaming, but I am also a realist and now is the time to put feet to our dream of having a home built DEBT-FREE. As of this year we have all the trusses up to put a roof up. To say anticipating is building is an understatement!

It's so funny because most people love to go camping and get excited about the prospect of going RVing and for us it is bleh... Instead, we get excited to stay in hotel rooms just to have space and the kids love the soft beds. I know a lot of people think living minimally means living small. However, my dream is to have a BIG house full of kids and a limited amount of household goods that I really love. This small living journey has taught us so much including to appreciate space.

When we moved onto our property there was no electricity for months, but it felt even longer. The sound of generators running all day was so unsettling they were so loud. We also didn't have running water and we only had a very small hauling tank. So, we were perpetually running out of water. The greatest lesson we have learned thus far is to be GRATEFUL for small things that so many people take for granted like: water, propane, heat, electricity, and unadulterated food supply etc.

We knew our decision to homestead and go debt-free would present challenges and boy has it! However, Yahweh has been with us every step of the way to provide great blessings and provisions. Tonight I will go to sleep hopeful that this season of RV living will indeed come to an end, but until then I am learning to be content during the journey.
